Thompson to Commentate King Edward VII Gold Cup PDF Print E-mail

America’s Cup personality returns to site that sparked a career!

HAMILTON, Bermuda (July 30, 2007) — Tucker Thompson, who provided on-the-water commentary of the 32nd America’s Cup Match for the sports network Versus, will be the featured commentator for the centennial anniversary of the King Edward VII Gold Cup trophy, scheduled Oct. 9-14.

Thompson, of Annapolis, Md., is the owner of T2Productions, a production and online broadcasting company for sailing and marine-related shows that broadcasts sailing coverage on demand at http://www.t2p.tv. Thompson, who sailed the 2000 America’s Cup challenger trials with U.S. syndicate America True, is also a professional sailing commentator, racing sailor and performance sailing coach.

Thompson’s commentary career sprouted roots during the Gold Cup in 1996. Thompson and British skipper Andy Green, with whom he was racing, sat on the lawn at the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and said to each other, “We can do this commentary stuff.” Some 11 years later the two were reunited during the America’s Cup Match in Valencia as commentators for Versus.

“Commentating from the America’s Cup has been the highlight of my career,” said 33-year-old Thompson, “but I couldn’t turn down a chance to come back to Bermuda. The Gold Cup is one of the best events in the world. It has so much more to offer than just the racing – the people, the tradition, the scenery, the venue and the parties. It’s one of the events that I look forward to coming back to.”

“We look forward to welcoming back Tucker for the centennial anniversary Gold Cup,” said event organizer Les Crane. “The Gold Cup has helped propel many sailors’ careers and we feel Tucker is like family.”

The Notice of Race is available for download from the official event Web site, www.bermudagoldcup.com, under Event Info. The Schedule of Events also is available there.

The Gold Cup is slated as Stage 14 of the World Match Racing Tour. The tour champion at the end of the year will be named the ISAF Match Racing World Champion.

The Bermuda Department of Tourism is the Official Host Sponsor of the Gold Cup. Event sponsors include Renaissance Re, Max Capital Group Ltd, Bermuda Telephone Company, Bermuda Premium Spirits, Correia Construction, Oleander Cycles and Ace Limited.
