Into the Quarter Finals...

Update: 3;14. Flight 2 of the quarterfinals has finished. That's it for today, flights 3,4,5 will be sailed on Saturday morning. Going on now is the ProAm fleet race. Full report later this evening.

In flight two it was Monnin over Walker, Ainslie over Mirsky, Williams over Berntsson and Minoprio over Richard, a repeat of flight 1's results.

Update 1:30 PM. Quarterfinals underway. Flight 1 has been completed. Monnin over Walker, Ainslie over Mirksy, Williams over Berntsson, Minoprio over Richard.

Update 12:00 Noon: The repechage flights have finished. In flight 5 Mirsky over Hansen, Walker over Robertson, Perry over Iehl. Flight 2 Match 2 not sailed yesterday has also been completed, Robertson over Perry. Advancing to the quarter finals are Torvar Mirsky (he'll sail against Ben Ainslie) and Blythe Walker (sails against Eric Monnin).

Update 11:00 AM: Flight 4 of the repechage completed. Mirsky over Walker, Hansen over Perry, Roberton over Iehl.

Update 10 AM: This morning winds are light from the south. Flights 3,4 and 5 of the repechage to select sailors in 7th and 8th place to advance to the quarterfinals of the Argo Group Gold Cup are now underway. Once completed, the quarterfinals will begin.

This afternoon the ProAm fleet regatta is scheduled for 2 PM, with amateur sailors getting a chance to sail with the professionals here on Hamilton Harbour in the International One Design sailboats.

Today is the second day of racing for the Optimist sailors from Bermuda and around the world in the Renaissance Reinsurance Junior Gold Cup, sailing in the Sound.

High pressure is building in from the west, allowing for fair weather over the next few days. Northerly winds will gradually ease, becoming light by this afternoon, but seas will remain rough until tonight. Unsettled conditions are likely to develop next week.

Walker v. Monnin, Mirsky v. Ainslie, Williams v. Berntsson and Richard v. Minoprio in the 'knockout' first to three quatrterfinals

Hamilton, Bermuda (October 9, 2009): From this point on, Argo Group Gold Cup action continues with all knockout matches, first skipper to three, in the quarterfinal, semifinal and final stages. Repecha ge Flights 3, 4 and 5 were sailed first today to decide the final two of the eight teams that moved up the ladder toward the $50,000 first place prize or even a share of the $100,000 total purse.

Torvar Mirsky (AUS) Mirsky Racing Team came through that round robin with a perfect 5-0 score. For that he will face unbeaten Ben Ainslie in quarterfinal Match 2. Mirsky is the top ranked skipper on the world Match Racing Tour. Course conditions saw an early light and shifty northerly breeze fill in nicely as the morning racing moved into the second flight of the day. Mirsky was in top form and he will need to continue at that level to move past ainslie

Bermudian Blythe Walker and his Max Re team pulled a stunning gybe at the finish of his final repechage match against the young kiwi Phil Robertson. Walker won by just a meter and went 3-2. He will face Eric Monnin (SUI) Search.ch who was first in Group 1 in the first quarterfinal Match.

Renaissance Reinsurance Junior Gold Cup
High gusts, squalls and potential thunderstorms Thursday morning kept the Jr Gold Cup sailors off the water until 11 am after which it became a perfect sailing day in the Great Sound. Sailed in 16 - 20 knot westerly's left Argentine Ingnacio "Nacho" Rogala  in first place firing off a 1,2,,1 followed by solid performances by Bermudians Owen Siese and Kalin Hillier. Dominican Paloma Esteban is in 4th place and is the leading female in the group of 35 sailors.
