Hamilton, Bermuda (October 8, 2009): With Argo Group Gold Cup action delayed by light breezes on Tuesday and breakdowns in heavy winds and squalls on Wednesday, action continues Thursday to complete the Stage one, three-group round robin and the repecharge to decide the eight teams that move up the ladder toward the $50,000 first place prize or even a share of the $100,000 total purse.
Racing has been delayed at least one hour awaiting passage of a squall line associated with a frontal zone passing over Bermuda. Forecasters are predicting high winds and a chance of lightning.
Groups 2 & 3 have both completed four flights and have three more today to complete their initial round robin stage. Group 3 will complete their final three flights early then Group 2 will swap into the boats. One match will be added to each flight in Group 2 today making each flight consist of 5 matches. The fifth matches will be Group 1 competitors who missed matches Wednesday because of boat damage: Allen v. Monnin in Flight 5 Match 5, Corbett v. Monnin in Flight 6 Match 5 and Swinton v. Mirsky in Flight 7 Match 5.
The top two in each group automatically advance to the quarters while third and fourth places have one more chance in the repecharge round robin to be sailed at the end of he day, time permitting.
Crews from the Royal Bermuda Yacht Club and Triangle Rigging worked into the night on repairs to get ten of the classic International One Design (IOD) sailboats back into commission. Winds should moderate from the high twenties early to high teens later in the day.

Marine Synopsis - Strong winds will continue today as a cold front swings through from the northwest. Showers can be expected this morning with the chance of thunder and possible gusts to gale force for a time. Winds will slowly ease behind the front, but rough seas will remain through Friday.
Today - Winds westerly 22 to 28 knots, with gusts to 40 knots or higher in squally showers early, veering northwesterly 18 to 22 knots in the afternoon... A band of rain with widespread showers and a likelihood of thunder, with poor to very poor visibility, clearing during the afternoon... Seas increasing, inside the reef 2 to 4 ft... Outside the reef 7 to 11 ft... Sunrise: 7:17 am.
Tonight - Winds northwesterly 18 to 22 knots, easing north-northwesterly 15 to 20 knots later... Seas inside the reef 2 to 4 ft... Outside the reef 8 to 12 ft... Sunset: 6:55 pm.
Friday - Winds northerly 10 to 15 knots, gradually easing 8 to 12 knots, becoming variable 5 to 10 knots overnight... Isolated showers with mainly fair visibility... Seas inside the reef 2 to 3 ft... Outside the reef 8 to 12 ft... Sunrise: 7:18 am; Sunset: 6:54 pm.

Ainslie and Richard tops in Groups 2 & 3 after four flights. Group 1 in a tangle after boat damage… Williams leads with 6 points

Hamilton, Bermuda (October 7, 2009): British Olympic Gold medal winner Ben Ainslie was first out of the box in the first match of flight 2 for Group 2 at the Argo Group Gold Cup Wednesday morning. He took the win from Bermuda's Olympian Paula Lewin-Crews. Ainslie went on to win three matches today. With another first in Tuesday's dying breeze, he stands at the top of Group 2 with 4-0, four wins and no losses.
Following Ainslie in Group 2 with 3-1 records are Adam Minoprio (NZL), Seb Col (FRA), and Bjorn Hansen. Dave Perry (USA) is 2-2, Alvaro Marinho (POR) stands 1-3 while Rasmus Viltoft (DEN) and Paula Lewin Crews (BER) are winless at 0-4.
Group 3 took to the water after the 4th flight for Group 2 and also completed four flights after a slight pause to allow a powerful wind and rain squall to pass. They raced the two pre-squall with jib and main only, but the rainstorm dampened the wind enough to allow the boats to sail with spinnakers. Group 2 and 3 will complete their round robin on Thursday, weather permitting.
